Tax: FCT-IRS Seal Off School, Hotel, Others

The FCT’s Inland Revenue Service has sealed off the premises of Gratias International School in Games Village, Kaura, Regency Hotels in Garki, Abuja and 2 other businesses.

The Acting Director, Legal Services of the FCT-IRS, Mr Festus Tsavsar led the team on Thursday to seal off the businesses over alleged tax evasion.

Mr Tsavsar explained that the closures were backed by a court order  obtained by the IRS while also adding that the hotel and business premises contravene FCT tax laws by refusing to file their annual returns, despite issuing several notices, including court summons.

While speaking to newsmen, Mr Tsavsar said, “We have been able to effectively comply with the court order by sealing off the premises as directed. We went to Gratias International School located in Games Village, Kaura, and sealed it off.

“The offence they committed was refusal to file their annual returns despite many notices, including a Court Summon but the school management refused to comply.

“We are at their premises and the management refused to attend to us; and refused to open their doors, despite many calls for them to do so to enable us to enforce the court order”

The Acting Director expressed concern over the school’s refusal to comply with the tax law while also describing the schools alleged decision to change its name to DGIS College as an attempt to evade tax.

According to him, “This is also a criminal offence. The school has not been paying their taxes at all, and also refused to file their annual returns since establishment,”

From the school, the team moved to No. 4, Port Harcourt Crescent Area 11, Garki where they sealed Residency Hotels, for the same offense before going seal off Rural Urban Homes Ltd in Utako and two other businesses, Trevari International Company and Phenomenon International Company both located within Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.
