The House of Representatives on Monday grilled the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for its inability to protect the rights of Nigerians over the recent hike in the price of cement.
The Joint Committee on Solid Minerals, Industry, Commerce, and Special Duties expressed their displeasure when the agency appeared before it during a public hearing of the committees to investigate the arbitrary increase in the price of cement by manufacturers of cement in Nigeria.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Jonathan Gaza while describing (FCCPC) as a mother who has forgotten her child said, the increase in the price of cement has a direct bearing on the increase in building collapses experienced in the country.
Earlier, the director of surveillance and investigations FCCPC Boladale Adeyinka and the chairman of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (KOREN) Engr Sadiq Abubakar said, the increase in the price of cement is not a result of a dollar increase but of epileptic power supply, high cost of diesel and operational costs.
Also speaking at the hearing was the head of building research at the Nigeria Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Jubril Sule. He said the institute has introduced Postelana as an alternative to cement as a step to manage the high cost of the product.
The Deputy Controller Tariff/Trade CK Niagwan of the Nigeria Customs Service informed the committee that it has no records of limestone exportation.
