Iran: Mohammad Mokhber, Prepares To Take Over As President After The Death Of Raisi

The First Vice President of Iran, Mohammad Mokhber is set to take the position of president after the death of Ebrahim Raisi.
Late President Ebrahim Raisi who was coming to the end of his first four-year term died from a helicopter crash that took place on Sunday, 19th May 2024.
According to the Iranian Constitution, the Vice President takes over “in the event of the President’s death, Dismissals, Resignation, Absence or Illness for more than 2 months.”
Mokhber is expected to take over as acting President even as the country gears up for an election to select a permanent successor which is to be held within 50 days, according to the constitution.
Mokhber’s appointment as acting President requires the approval of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader who has the mandate to pronounce final words in all state affairs.
In preparations for the upcoming election process, the parliament speaker, the head of the judiciary, and the Vice President are to be saddled with the responsibility of organizing the national vote.
Vice president Mohammad Mokhber has held several official positions before his appointment as Vice President to Raisi in August 2021.
Following the I979 revolution, Mokhber under Imam Khomeini’s order chaired the establishment process of a governmental organization tasked with the management of confiscated properties.
The establishment of the foundation in the 1980s has expanded to be a major state economy with shares in various sectors.
According to the constitution’s two-term limits that bind the electoral process for President for every four years since the Islamic Republic first voted in 1980; The position of the Prime Minister does not exist in Iran, and the president assisted by several Vice Presidents is responsible for the appointment and direction of the cabinet.
