Kano Assembly Repeals Principal Law Balkanizing Kano Emirate, Passes New Law Restoring It

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed a new law empowering the kingmakers to reinstall Sanusi as the sole Emir of Kano State after dissolving all five emirate councils in the state.

The Kano Emirate had earlier been balkanized into 5 emirate councils by a Principal Law on 5th December 2019 which dethroned Sanusi Lamido Sanusi but has now been repealed by the Kano State Assembly who enacted a new law.

The New Kano Emirate Councils Law has not only reinstated the five demoted kingmakers to their former positions but has also empowered them to reconvene in Kano and reinstall former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Muhammadu Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, as the sole Emir of Kano.

The law states “The Governor shall take all necessary measures to restore the status of the Kano Emirate System to its positions prior to the enactment of the repealed Principal Law dated 5th December 2019”

“The traditional office holders and title holders elevated or appointed to office created under the repealed Principal Law, dated 5th December, 2019, shall revert to their position where such positions previously existed under recognized custom and traditions prior to the enactment of the repealed Principal Law dated 5th December, 2019.”

The law also added that the commissioner responsible for Local Government shall oversee all transitional arrangements including how best to deal with the assets and liabilities of the abolished emirates and the new structure created under the repealed Principal Law dated 5th December 2019.
