MTN Nigeria offices across the country are currently experiencing large crowds as many angry customers have been unable to make or receive calls since late Saturday.
This issue has arisen because numerous phone lines have been barred because they have not been linked to National Identification Numbers (NINs).
Telecommunication companies started disconnecting phone lines not linked with National Identification Numbers (NINs).
Many customers whose lines were disconnected, however, claim they have already linked their numbers to NINs, some multiple times.
As of Monday morning, large, angry crowds have been gathering outside MTN offices in Karu, Ibadan, Osogbo, Abuja, Uyo, Kano, Lagos, and other parts of the country.
The recent disconnection is due to the July 31 deadline set by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
This deadline requires phone companies to block all customers who have not linked their NINs to their phone numbers.
This restriction comes at a time when frustrations are high among the public and has added to the tension ahead of a planned nationwide protest on August 1.
