President Tinubu Inaugurates 30 Hybrid CNG Buses

On Monday, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated 30 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)–powered buses in Abuja as part of the Presidential CNG Initiative.

The buses, donated by the Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), are locally manufactured and each has a capacity of 100 passengers.

The launch followed recent discussions between President Tinubu and Innocent Chukwuma, CEO of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Ltd., about advancing CNG-powered public transport.

Chukwuma indicated that more CNG buses would soon be available, underscoring an ongoing collaboration with the Federal Government.

President Tinubu emphasized that CNG usage would reduce transportation costs, enhance productivity, and decrease Nigeria’s reliance on imported petrol and diesel.

He cited India’s successful CNG transition as a model for Nigeria’s potential benefits.

The Innoson Motors-designed buses are expected to significantly improve the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

DAPPMAN Chairperson, Winifred Akpani and NNPC Foundation Managing Director, Emmanuella Arukwe both endorsed the initiative, highlighting the buses as a sustainable alternative to diesel and a major step towards tackling Nigeria’s energy challenges.
