The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT recently seized a significant quantity of cannabis sativa and apprehended four suspected drug traffickers.

The drug seizure included a total of 72 bags of cannabis sativa, each weighing 40 kilograms, with a combined weight exceeding 2880 kilograms.

Furthermore, the suspects, comprising three Ghanaians and one Beninoi, were handed over to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Marine Command.

The Commander, NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Rafiu Oladejo who was represented at the handing over ceremony by the Executive Officer, Navy Captain Mutalib Raji disclosed that the operation was the result of actionable intelligence received by NNS BEECROFT, leading to the interception of the contraband on 25 August 2024.

According to a statement by Base Information Officer Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, Lt Hussaini Ibrahim, the successful operation was made possible by the deployment of a Quick Response Team, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to combatting illegal activities in the region.

“Interestingly, the team also arrested three Ghanians – Mr Godswill Zevor, Mr Monday Kpomeja, Mr Gbega Agbeko and a Beninoi Mr Elugbe Philip; making a total of four suspects,” he disclosed.

Ibrahim elaborated that the initiative was a result of the strategic directive from the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, to uphold a strong presence along the Lagos waterways and nearby creeks, in order to guarantee a secure and safe maritime environment conducive for economic activities to flourish.

Furthermore, he issued a stern warning to those involved in the illegal drug trade to cease their activities, as NNS BEECROFT will persist in pursuing any criminal elements operating within its area of operation.

“This successful arrest of a large quantity of cannabis sativa and four suspects is testament to unrelenting efforts of NNS BEECROFT to curtailing spread and use of illicit drugs among teaming youth which negatively affect their health and threaten national security.” He stated.
