Lawyers Withdraw From Case Of Abuja Bolt Driver Assaulted By Lawmaker After Apology

The legal team representing Stephen Abuwatseye, the Abuja-based Bolt driver allegedly assaulted by House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh, has officially withdrawn from the case.

Deji Adeyanju and Partners explained that their decision to cease legal representation was made in order to maintain the firm’s professional integrity and uphold the highest ethical standards in the legal profession.

The incident occurred when Abuwatseye was reportedly assaulted by Ikwechegh while delivering a food item to the lawmaker’s residence in Maitama, Abuja.

Following the assault, Ikwechegh was arraigned before a Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja, where he was granted bail.

However, in a surprising twist, Abuwatseye issued a public apology to Ikwechegh on Thursday, calling for unity among Nigerians.

This apology appears to have influenced the law firm’s decision to withdraw from the case, though the exact reasons for the change of position have not been fully clarified.

The withdrawal raises questions about the future of the case and the factors behind Abuwatseye’s sudden shift in stance.

Reacting, a statement by the law firm signed by Zainab Ortega reads: “We wish to formally announce the withdrawal of our legal representation in the case involving the alleged assault of Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye.

“On October 28, 2024, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye walked into our law firm, visibly distressed, and sought redress over an alleged assault.

“Following his complaint, and having verified his claim, we took steps to protect Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye’s rights, on pro bono basis, culminating in the arraignment of the alleged assaulter.

“However, in view of recent developments and after careful consideration, we have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in order to protect our professional integrity and maintain the highest ethical standard in the legal profession.

“We wish Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye the very best, while we assure the general public of our continuous commitment towards protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of society.”
