Court Orders Yahaya Bello To Remain In EFCC Custody Until Ruling

Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has adjourned ruling on the bail applications of former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, and two others, until December 10.

The defendants, who face 16 counts of corruption charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), pleaded not guilty in court.

Bello’s lawyer, Joseph Bodunde Dauda, SAN, argued that the ex-governor should be granted bail, emphasizing his respect for the law and right to liberty.

“It is within his rights to enjoy his liberty while preparing for trial,” he said.

“The prosecution’s objection is based on the fact that he is facing charges at the Federal High Court and has refused to appear to take his plea.

“The court should not use issues from another court to determine issues before the FCT High
Court,” he noted

However, EFCC counsel Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, opposed the application, citing pending charges in another court as grounds for denial.

While the EFCC sought to proceed with trial immediately, Bello’s defense requested more time to prepare, noting they had only received the charges on November 26.

The case continues as the court directs the three defendants to remain in EFCC custody until the ruling.
