Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a distinguished Nigerian economist, has been reappointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term on Friday.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Geneva-based global trade body.
“WTO members today agreed to give incumbent Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala a second term as Director-General of the WTO,” the Geneva-based global trade body said in a statement.
Although she was the only candidate for the role, her confirmation depended on receiving the backing, or at least the consent, of all 166 WTO member countries, including the United States.
Okonjo-Iweala’s second four-year term, which was approved at a special General Council meeting, will begin on Sept. 1, 2025.
She took office as director-general in March 2021 and is the first African and the first woman to serve as head of the organization.
