Labour Party Seek Vacancies For Defecting Lawmakers, Opens ‘Hall of Shame’ Register

Following the defection of five lawmakers to APC, the Labour Party has announced plans to approach the Speaker of the House of Representatives to declare the seats of defecting lawmakers vacant, in line with House rules.

The party’s leadership has also instructed its legal team to initiate proceedings to reclaim the mandates of these defectors.

In an effort to publicly shame those abandoning the party, the Labour Party has introduced a “Hall of Shame” register, which will feature the names of any lawmakers who defect without relinquishing the mandates they won on the party’s platform.

Senator Francis Ezenwa Onyewuchi and other defecting House members will be the first to appear in the register.

The party condemned the defections, accusing lawmakers of being motivated by financial gain rather than ideological change.

It pointed to Donatus Mathew, a former Okada rider elected under the Labour Party banner, who turned away after benefiting from its resources.

Labour further criticized the defectors for their lack of grassroots support, urging Nigerians to reject such politicians in future elections.

The party urged voters to “snub” political opportunists undermining the country’s democratic integrity.
