On Sunday, January 26, 2025, Governor Aliyu Sokoto of Sokoto State approved the payment of a new minimum wage of N70,000 for public servants in the state. This decision will take immediate effect starting Monday, January 27, 2025.
In a statement he signed and shared on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Sokoto disclosed that the new salary structure would cover state civil servants and their counterparts at the local government area councils across Sokoto State.
“We have made provisions for this new salary structure to cover both state civil servants and their colleagues at the local government area councils throughout the state,” the governor said.
He also emphasized that the approval aligns with the federal government’s newly established national minimum wage and fulfills a promise he made as governor. “This approval aligns with the new national minimum wage set by the federal government and fulfils the promise I made as the governor of this state,” he stated.
The governor urged civil servants to respond positively to the wage increase by diligently performing their duties. “We encourage our civil servants to reciprocate this thoughtful gesture by diligently fulfilling their responsibilities,” he added.
Additionally, Governor Sokoto reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to being worker-friendly, particularly in ensuring timely salary payments. “Through the prompt and consistent payment of salaries, which will be processed from the 19th to the 22nd of every month,” he stated.
The announcement was met with approval from various stakeholders, who expressed their delight on social media.
