MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has issued an apology to its customers following a public uproar over a controversial 200 percent increase in data tariffs. The company’s apology comes after it raised the prices of various data bundles, including its 15GB plan, from N2,000 to N6,000.
The surge in data charges exceeded the 50 percent increase that had been approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), leaving many customers frustrated.
In addition to the 200 percent increase for the 15GB plan, MTN also revised the cost of its 1.5TB plan from N150,000 to N240,000, a 60 percent hike.
Similarly, the 100GB bundle, which previously cost N20,000, was replaced by a 90GB bundle priced at N25,000. The 600GB bundle saw its price jump from N75,000 to N120,000 for 480GB, reflecting a 60 percent surge.
Despite the backlash, MTN has not yet indicated whether it will review these increased rates.
In a message addressing its customers, MTN acknowledged the dissatisfaction caused by the price hikes.
