At the 2024 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, , called on Nigerian politicians to stop using insecurity as a political tool.
In her keynote address, titled “A Social Contract For Nigeria’s Future,” she highlighted the crucial link between security and socio-economic development, emphasizing that one cannot exist without the other.
Okonjo-Iweala condemned the practice of leveraging insecurity to undermine political opponents, noting its devastating effects on lives and property.
She also addressed the issue of crude oil theft, describing it as “intolerable” and urging the use of available technology to tackle the problem.
“There is so much technology available now to track such theft, and there must be no more excuses for inaction,” she asserted.
The conference, themed “Pressing Forward; A National Posture to Rebuilding Nigeria,” saw notable figures like former Ghanaian President John Mahama and Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima in attendance, reinforcing the call for unified action to address insecurity and protect Nigeria’s economic assets.
