FUTO Confers First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Governors Uzodimma And Zulum At 36th Convocation

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), awarded honorary degrees to three distinguished Nigerians – First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, and Governor Babagana Umar Zulum of Borno State – at its 36th convocation ceremony, in recognition of their remarkable contributions to education, governance, and societal development.

While Senator Tinubu and Governor Uzodimma were conferred with the honorary Doctor of Management, Honoris Causa, Governor Zulum received the honorary Doctor of Technology, Honoris Causa.

The First Lady dedicated her award to the girl child, underscoring her commitment to empowering young girls across the country.

A total of 632 students were admitted to the university’s postgraduate programs, having met all the academic requirements.

In his address, FUTO’s Chancellor, His Royal Highness Alhaji Mohammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa, commended the university’s management for navigating various challenges and urged the Federal Government to increase funding for the institution, particularly to support the growing demands of infrastructure and research.

He also called on stakeholders, including alumni, corporate bodies, and multinational organizations, to aid the university in achieving its mission of advancing national economic development through skilled manpower.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, congratulated the awardees and the new graduates, urging them to focus on agricultural, vocational, and information technology skills as tools for both personal growth and national progress.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to tertiary education, citing the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to assist students with fees and personal upkeep.

The FUTO Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) Nnenna Oti, highlighted the university’s key achievements, including accreditation of academic programs, establishment of a Centre of Excellence, and improved global rankings.

However, she acknowledged ongoing challenges such as inadequate staff quarters, student hostel shortages, and the urgent need for perimeter fencing.

She expressed gratitude to the federal government, particularly President Tinubu and Governor Uzodimma, for their unwavering support.

Senator Jack Tilley-Gyado, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of FUTO’s 13th Governing Council, also praised Governor Uzodimma’s commitment to the university, particularly in securing approval for the FUTO University Teaching Hospital and enhancing security on campus.

In their remarks, the awardees expressed deep appreciation for the recognition.

Governor Uzodimma, visibly honored, emphasized his government’s support for FUTO and pledged to continue resolving the university’s challenges, including funding key projects.

Governor Zulum promised to partner with FUTO in its growth and development, while Senator Tinubu encouraged the new graduates to take ownership of Nigeria and work towards making it a better place for future generations.

She also announced her plan to launch the Green Environment Club, aimed at promoting cleanliness and proper waste management across the nation.

The First Lady also revealed her N50 million donation as an endowment for the best graduating student and reiterated her commitment to advancing the cause of the girl child.

The convocation ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including governors from other states, and attracted a wide audience from both within and outside Imo State.
