Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has issued an immediate ban on the use of students for manual labour within school premises.
The directive, which was communicated through a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, comes after an unscheduled visit by the governor to the School for Arabic Studies in Kano.
During the visit, the governor discovered students engaged in digging a toilet pipeline on school grounds.
Visibly displeased, Governor Yusuf confronted the headmaster about the assignment.
The headmaster explained that the task was given after school hours. However, the governor emphasized that schools should be environments focused on education and moral guidance, not manual labour.
“Schools are for learning, not for hard labour,” Governor Yusuf stated.
He ordered the immediate cessation of the practice and made it clear that such tasks should never be imposed on students again.
In addition, the governor assured the school management that his administration would prioritize the renovation of dilapidated school buildings, including the mosque within the school compound.
He also instructed that all school-related projects be submitted to the Ministry of Education or directly to his office for proper planning and execution.
