The Lagos High Court in Igbosere has extended its previous order limiting demonstrations in Lagos to the Freedom and Peace Parks located in Ojota and Ketu.
This extension follows an application by Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN, for an extension of the restriction, after adhering to pre-action protocols mandated by another judge, Justice Emmanuel Ogundare.
Pedro, represented in court by the Director for Civil Litigations, Mr. Hameed Oyenuga, stated that the initial court order had been served on all relevant parties in accordance with pre-action protocols.
Despite the respondents not yet replying to the application, Pedro argued that extending the restriction was necessary to maintain peace in the state amidst ongoing national protests.
Justice Sonaike, acknowledging the Attorney-General’s compliance with Justice Ogundare’s orders, ruled that protests be confined to the Freedom and Peace Parks until full adherence to the preliminary orders is achieved.
Justice Ogundare had previously imposed restrictions to ensure public safety and prevent significant loss during the protests, reflecting concerns over potential disruptions similar to those experienced during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.
The application lists Adamma Ukpabi and Tosin Harsogba (Active Citizens Group), Comrade Juwon Sanyaolu and Hassan Soweto (Take It Back Movement), as well as the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, as co-defendants.
