The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued permits to several companies, including Golden Penny Power Limited, MTN Communications Nigeria Limited, and Havenhill Synergy, for mini-grid electricity generation.
In the first quarter of 2024, NERC granted nine new off-grid generation licenses with a combined gross capacity of 109.69 megawatts, along with three new trading licenses.
Golden Penny Power Limited has been authorized to build six off-grid gas plants across Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, and Cross River states, totaling 100 megawatts.
MTN Communications Nigeria Limited has received approval to establish four captive generation plants in Lagos State, adding 15.94 megawatts to the grid.
These initiatives are part of NERC’s strategy to improve electricity access and attract investment in Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly in underserved regions.
The new mini-grid regulations are designed to streamline the permitting process, enforce safety and technical standards, and encourage a competitive environment in electricity generation.
