The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, has announced that all government hospitals in Nigeria will provide free Caesarean sections for pregnant women.
The initiative, aimed at reducing maternal mortality rates and ensuring safer deliveries, was unveiled during the second day of the ongoing Nigeria Health Sector-Wide Joint Annual Review.
In a statement posted on the ministry’s X platform, Minister Pate emphasized that “No woman should lose her life simply because she can’t afford a C-section.”
His remarks came after he officially launched the Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative (MAMII), a key effort by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to address Nigeria’s alarmingly high maternal and neonatal mortality rates—among the highest in the world.
The initiative aims to ensure that pregnant women have access to essential surgical care, regardless of their financial situation.
In addition to the government’s efforts, major partners have pledged to support MAMII to ensure its success and sustainability.
