NLC President, Summoned Over Alleged Terrorism Financing, Others

In a surprising development, the Nigeria Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning on allegations of terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, and other related offenses.

The summons, issued in a letter dated August 19, 2024, and signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, indicates that Ajaero’s name has come up in an ongoing investigation into “Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime.”

Ajaero has been instructed to appear for an interview on Tuesday, August 20, at 10 a.m. at the IRT Complex in Guzape District, Abuja.

The letter warns that a warrant for his arrest will be issued if he fails to comply.

This development occurs amidst growing tensions between the NLC and the government, following a recent raid on the NLC headquarters by security forces.

The NLC has accused the government of targeting the organization, demanding an apology, the return of seized items, and the release of detained individuals.

As the nation awaits Ajaero’s response to the police summons, concerns about the motives behind these serious allegations and their potential impact on Nigeria’s labor movement are escalating.
