NLC Threatens To Resume Strike Action Tuesday

The Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) has said that the strike may continue tomorrow as they reject 62,000 Naira or 100,000 Naira as the minimum wage proposed by the Federal Government.

Chris Onyeka, Assistant General Secretary of the NLC stated this during a discussion program on Channels Television this morning.

NLC had initially agreed on 250,000 naira as the new minimum wage at the last meeting of the Tripartite committee, but rejected the 40 percent retrenchment of workers on 62,000 naira proposed minimum wage by the Nigerian government.

Mr Onyeka said “Our position is very clear, we have never considered accepting 62,000 Naira or any other wage that we know is below what we know can take Nigerian workers home. we will not negotiate a starvation wage”.

Chris stated that the one week date given to Federal Government to come to an agreed price increase on minimum wage, would elapse by midnight on Tuesday.

He added that should the Federal Government and National Assembly fail in meetings the demands of workers by Tuesday, the organs of the union and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) would meet to decide on a date that action would be taken for a resumed strike.

“We have given the Federal Government a one-week notice to look at the issues and that one week expires tomorrow (Tuesday). If after tomorrow, we have not seen any tangible response from the government, the organs of the organised labor will meet to decide what next” he said.
