Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, has sharply criticized the Nigerian security forces for their handling of ongoing protests against government mismanagement.
Reflecting on the violence and disregard exhibited by security operatives, Moghalu argued that their primary focus seems to be on protecting the regime rather than safeguarding the lives and properties of Nigerian citizens.
The protests, now in their sixth day, have seen escalating violence, including deaths, arrests, and property damage, despite appeals from President Bola Tinubu and other prominent figures for calm.
Moghalu expressed his concerns on X, stating, “@PoliceNG & other security agencies in Nigeria have an unfortunate mindset. Their number one priority is regime protection, not the protection of Nigerian lives and property. That is why they have wanton disregard for the lives of protesters, & is why kidnapping, terrorism reign.
“If they were to confront criminality with the ferocity and determination they exhibit toward citizens who are protesting hunger, our security situation would be vastly different and improved. The Nigerian state has little regard for its citizens, political rhetorics aside,” he said.
