In a devastating incident in Kali community, Gumi Local Government Area, Zamfara State, more than 20 villagers died after their boat capsized while fleeing a bandit attack.
According to a resident, the attack occurred last Sunday when bandits, armed with sophisticated weapons and traveling on motorcycles, stormed the village around 1:00 pm.
“The bandits were seen moving towards Kalli village on motorcycles with sophisticated weapons to attack the community, which forced the villagers to flee for their safety,” he added.
The resident explained that when the villagers attempted to escape the assault, their boat, which was overloaded, capsized in the Birnin Magaji River.
Search and recovery efforts have so far located bodies in several rivers: five at the Falale River, four at the Birnin Magaji River, and three at the Gadar Gummi River.
Speaking further, he said the bandits also targeted surrounding communities, including Kwammaka, Kwammaka Jibi, Kwammaka Mai Katsina, Kallin, and Kazura villages. As of now, the police have not released an official statement regarding the incident.
The police have yet to issue a statement on the reported incident.
